The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has restored calm following a disturbance that disrupted the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Efiduase Sekyere East Constituency Executive Elections at the SDA Church polling station in Wiamoase.
According to a police statement, the incident occurred on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at about 7:45 a.m., when Kwame Afrifa Mensah, 43, allegedly led a group of about 30 men to the polling station.
Police said security personnel approached the group to ascertain the purpose of their presence, but the men allegedly became aggressive, attacked officers on duty and disrupted the electoral process by throwing electoral materials onto the ground.
The suspected ringleader, Kwame Afrifa Mensah, together with six other suspects, was arrested to assist with investigations, while the remaining members of the group fled the scene. Police said efforts are underway to apprehend the other suspects.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr. Afrifa Mensah claimed some of his supporters had been sidelined in the electoral process and that he had obtained an interlocutory injunction to halt the election.
However, the police stated that neither the Electoral Commission nor the police had received any court order or injunction directing that the election be suspended.
Following the swift intervention of security personnel, calm was restored and voting resumed under adequate police protection. The constituency election proceeded without further incident and concluded peacefully at about 4:00 p.m., after which the Electoral Commission declared the results.
Later the same day, police said Kwame Afrifa Mensah and another suspect, Osman Awuni, 44, complained of ill health and were transported to the Mampong Government Hospital, where they were admitted for medical treatment.
The two suspects remain under police guard while receiving treatment.
The Ashanti North Regional Police Command said investigations into the incident are ongoing and assured the public that further updates would be provided as the case progresses.
