The Tema Regional Police Command has arrested a 52-year-old man for allegedly possessing 37 parcels of substances suspected to be Indian hemp at New York, near Airport Junction.

The suspect, identified as Ibrahim Saani, was arrested on Sunday, October 25, 2026, during a police operation following intelligence received by the command.

According to a statement signed by ASP Dede Dzakpasu, Head of Public Affairs at the Tema Regional Police Command, the operation was conducted at about 7 p.m., leading to the recovery of a bag containing 37 parcels of compressed substances suspected to be Indian hemp and a crusher.

The suspect was subsequently taken to the police station, together with the items retrieved, for further investigation.

However, preliminary investigations suggest that Saani may have been involved in the distribution of suspected narcotic substances within New York and surrounding communities.

The police also indicated that intelligence gathered suggested the suspect allegedly feigned madness to conceal his activities.

Police source said the suspected substances will be sent for forensic examination to establish their nature and also support further investigations into the case.

The Command noted that the suspect and any accomplices identified during the investigation would be arraigned before court after investigations are completed.

It has cautioned the public against involvement in drug-related activities and urged anyone with credible information about the possession, distribution or trafficking of illicit drugs to report to the nearest police station.

It also called for continued public cooperation in efforts to combat drug-related offences and protect communities, particularly the youth.
