The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old man in connection with an alleged fake gold syndicate that reportedly defrauded a gold aggregator of GH¢1.1 million in Berekum Municipality.
The suspect, identified as Gyamfi Christian, was arrested on August 17, 2026, at a hideout in Wamfie in the Dormaa East District following an intelligence-led investigation.
According to the police, the case was reported by Christopher Awuni, 29, a gold aggregator, who alleged that four men posing as gold sellers sold him 110 troy ounces of gold for GH¢1.1 million in July 2026.
The consignment was subsequently tested and found to be fake. The material has since been retained by the police as an exhibit.
During interrogation, Gyamfi Christian allegedly admitted his involvement in the transaction and told investigators that the deal took place at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality.
The police said the suspect also identified three alleged accomplices — Abraham, alias “Frenchman”, described as the alleged leader of the group, Isaac Antwi and Balthazar — who are currently at large.
Preliminary investigations have further linked the group to another alleged fake gold transaction in Drobo, in which a victim was reportedly defrauded of GH¢1.4 million earlier this year.
Gyamfi Christian remains in police custody and is assisting with investigations as efforts continue to locate and arrest the other suspects.
The Bono Regional Police Command has, meanwhile, urged members of the public to exercise caution when engaging in gold transactions and to report suspicious activities to the police.
The police have not indicated that any of the suspects have been convicted, and the allegations remain subject to investigation and due process.
