An 87-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour after being found guilty of defiling a nine-year-old girl in Ofankor, a suburb of Accra.
The conviction was secured by the Tesano Divisional Police Command, according to a press release issued by the Accra Regional Police Command on October 12, 2026.
The police identified the convict as Yaw Gahornu.
According to preliminary investigations, the case came to light on August 29, 2026, when the complainant returned from work and noticed bloodstains on her nine-year-old daughter’s clothing.
When she questioned the child, the girl reportedly disclosed that Gahornu had repeatedly sexually abused her between July and August 2026.
The police said the alleged abuse involved vaginal and anal penetration.
Further investigations revealed that the suspect had allegedly lured the child to his sleeping quarters and threatened to kill her if she told her mother about the abuse.
The case was reportedly brought to the attention of family members on August 31, 2026, after the convict’s granddaughter allegedly witnessed the abuse and informed relatives, including the complainant.
The matter was subsequently reported to the police for investigation.
Gahornu was arrested and charged before the Gender-Based Violence Court at the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) Headquarters.
The court found him guilty of defilement and sentenced him to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
In the statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the police welcomed the outcome of the case.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons, urging the public to report suspected cases of child abuse promptly to the police for investigation and appropriate action.
The case highlights the importance of reporting suspected sexual abuse and ensuring that children have access to protection and support when they disclose incidents of abuse.
