The Nkoranza South Constituency Youth Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bono East Region has commended the youth of Tanoso in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region for their intervention in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Convener of the Nkoranza South NDC Youth Wing, Ofosu Isaac, popularly known as Commander Yaw-White, described the action by the Tanoso youth as courageous and patriotic, saying it demonstrated the importance of community participation in protecting the country’s natural resources.
Speaking in an interview, Apiah-Kubi, Commander Yaw-White, said the response by the youth should serve as an example to other communities across the country.
Tensions reportedly escalated at the Tanoso Chief’s Palace following a confrontation between some youth and the Tanoso Ankobeahene over allegations linking him to illegal mining activities.
The youth subsequently arrested the Ankobeahene, Nana Amoako Atta, in connection with the allegations.
Commander Yaw-White called on the government, particularly President John Dramani Mahama, to recognise and support the Tanoso youth for what he described as their efforts to protect the environment.
He said the protection of the country’s lands and water bodies should not be left solely to the government and security agencies but should be regarded as a collective responsibility.
According to him, the involvement of young people in the fight against illegal mining demonstrates growing public awareness of the environmental and economic consequences of galamsey.
He said the NDC Youth Wing supports efforts to protect water bodies, restore degraded lands and promote responsible mining as part of the government’s broader agenda to reset the country’s economy and improve livelihoods.
Commander Yaw-White also cited alternative livelihood initiatives as an important component of efforts to provide sustainable employment opportunities for young people and reduce dependence on illegal mining.
He expressed solidarity with the Tanoso youth and other communities engaged in efforts to protect Ghana’s natural resources.
“The fight against galamsey is a fight for the future,” he said, urging communities to remain committed to protecting the country’s rivers, forests and farmlands for future generations.
