The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has urged regional police commanders to strengthen leadership, accountability and professionalism to improve public confidence in the Ghana Police Service.
He said the conduct of police officers had a direct bearing on the public’s perception of the state and its security institutions.
The minister made the call on Friday, August 21, 2026, at the National Police Headquarters in Accra, where he opened the Police Regional Command Conference.
He commended police officers across the country for their commitment and sacrifices in maintaining law and order and challenged regional commanders to ensure that officers under their supervision continued to uphold the highest standards of professional conduct.
Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak also highlighted the growing role of technology in policing, citing the TRAFITECH automated road traffic enforcement system and the National Criminal Automated Biometric Identification System as key initiatives aimed at improving law enforcement.
He said more than 700 digital enrolment stations were expected to be deployed across the country by the end of 2026.
The expansion, he said, would enhance intelligence-led policing, strengthen criminal investigations and support efforts to prevent and detect crime.
IGP Calls for Effective Leadership
The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said the Ghanaian public expected a police service that was professional, visible, competent, fair and worthy of trust.
He urged regional commanders to provide strong and effective leadership and to take decisions that would support the ongoing transformation of the service.
The IGP also called for closer cooperation among the various agencies within Ghana’s national security architecture.
He said stronger collaboration and sustained engagement among security agencies were necessary to effectively respond to emerging security threats and protect the public.
The conference brought together members of the Police Management Board (POMAB), the Chief Director of the Ministry of the Interior, the Medical Director of the Police Hospital, the Commandant of the Police Academy and regional police commanders from across the country.
The meeting provides the police leadership with an opportunity to assess operational challenges, strengthen coordination and identify measures to improve policing and public safety nationwide.
