Police Recover GH¢140,000 and AK-47 Rifle After Armed Robbery at Lashibi

The Ghana Police Service has recovered GH¢140,000 and an AK-47 assault rifle following an armed robbery attack on a mobile money vendor at Lashibi in the Greater Accra Region.

According to the Accra Regional Police Command, the robbery occurred on July 3, 2026, when two armed men on a motorbike attacked the vendor as he was driving home from work carrying a bag containing GH¢140,000.

Police said the suspects allegedly opened fire on the victim’s vehicle, damaging the right rear tyre and front windscreen before making away with the cash.

Preliminary investigations indicate that after seizing the money, the suspects attempted to flee on their motorbike. The victim reportedly fired at them, resulting in the death of one of the suspects at the scene, while the second suspect escaped.

The deceased suspect’s accomplice abandoned the bag containing the stolen GH¢140,000, which was subsequently recovered by police. The victim was not injured during the incident.

A search conducted on the deceased suspect led to the recovery of an AK-47 assault rifle, two magazines loaded with a total of 55 rounds of live ammunition, an additional 11 rounds of live ammunition, GH¢3,000 in cash, a Samsung mobile phone, and an identification card bearing the name Innocent Elemuwa Akachukue, aged 46.

Police also recovered five spent AK-47 shells and two spent pistol shells from the crime scene.

The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, autopsy and formal identification.

The Accra Regional Police Command has taken over investigations and said efforts are underway to apprehend the fleeing suspect.

The police have appealed to members of the public with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect to report to the nearest police station or contact the service through its emergency numbers 18555 or 191.
