The Tema Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect after intercepting a large quantity of compressed plant material believed to be cannabis during a highway operation along the Tema–Ada road.

The suspect, identified as Bismark Kpormeno, was taken into custody on May 31, 2026, following an operation conducted by officers of the Tema Highway Patrol Unit.

According to a police statement signed by ASP Dede Dzakpasu, Head of Public Affairs for the Tema Regional Police Command, the suspect was driving a Hyundai Mighty II container truck when officers signalled him to stop for inspection. However, he allegedly failed to comply and attempted to evade arrest.

Police officers pursued the vehicle and successfully apprehended the suspect at Bondase.

A subsequent search of the truck uncovered twelve sacks and eighty parcels of compressed plant material concealed inside the container and wrapped in adhesive tape. The substance is suspected to be cannabis, commonly known as Indian hemp.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the consignment was allegedly loaded in Kpeve in the Volta Region and was being transported to Ada.

The suspect remains in police custody and is assisting investigators with enquiries into the source and intended destination of the suspected narcotics.

Police have impounded both the vehicle and the seized exhibits as part of ongoing investigations.

The Tema Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to combating drug trafficking and other forms of organised crime, stressing that efforts to disrupt the movement and distribution of illegal substances will continue.

Authorities also appealed to members of the public to support law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities and providing credible information that can assist in the fight against crime.

The seizure forms part of broader police efforts to strengthen surveillance and enforcement along major transport corridors frequently used for the movement of illicit goods across the country.
