The Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit (MMT), Cezar Kale, has announced an ambitious plan to expand the company’s fleet to at least 1,000 buses by the end of 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen public transportation services across Ghana.
The planned fleet expansion will comprise a mix of mini buses, large-capacity coaches, and electric vehicles aimed at improving connectivity, increasing route coverage, and enhancing passenger comfort nationwide.
Speaking in an interview on Saturday following the 2026 Transport Sector Strategic Review Retreat in Ho, Mr. Kale said Metro Mass has already begun implementing the expansion strategy through major procurement initiatives.
According to him, the company recently entered into an agreement with Isuzu, through MAC Autos, for the supply of 300 Isuzu 29-seater buses. The first batch of 100 buses has already been commissioned and delivered, while an additional 200 units are expected to arrive between July and August. The final batch of 100 buses is scheduled for delivery between September and October.
Mr. Kale said the procurement forms part of the strategic initiatives outlined during the Transport Sector Strategic Review Retreat, where the Ministry of Transport and its agencies assessed progress and outlined measures to improve Ghana’s transportation system.
Beyond the Isuzu acquisition, the Managing Director disclosed that Metro Mass has engaged several other prospective suppliers to secure additional vehicles.
“We are confident that these engagements will yield positive results. By the grace of God, the cumulative effect of all these procurements will enable us to achieve our target of at least 1,000 buses by the end of the year,” he said.
Commitment to Affordable Transport
Mr. Kale reaffirmed Metro Mass Transit’s commitment to maintaining the most affordable transport fares in Ghana, describing the company as a critical social intervention vehicle established to serve the public interest.
Using the Accra-Kumasi route as an example, he noted that while some private transport operators charge between GH¢100 and GH¢150, Metro Mass fares on the same route range between GH¢75 and GH¢85.
“Feedback from the public continues to confirm that Metro Mass remains one of the most affordable transport options available to Ghanaians,” he said.
He emphasized that the company’s role as a state-owned transport provider goes beyond commercial considerations and includes ensuring that transportation remains accessible to ordinary citizens, even during periods of rising operational costs.
According to Mr. Kale, Metro Mass has played a significant role in moderating transport costs nationwide by maintaining lower fares despite pressure within the industry for fare increases.
Expansion of Route Coverage
The Managing Director also outlined plans to significantly expand Metro Mass operations across the country.
He explained that although the company was originally expected to operate on approximately 385 routes nationwide, a shortage of buses had reduced active operations to about 80 routes.
With the ongoing fleet expansion and recapitalization efforts, however, Metro Mass intends to restore services on all designated routes.
“Once we receive the full complement of buses and complete the capitalization process, we expect all 385 routes to become operational,” he said.
Mr. Kale noted that the newly acquired buses are particularly suited for long-distance and inter-city travel and will be deployed across all regions of the country.
Modern Passenger Experience
Highlighting the features of the new fleet, Mr. Kale described the buses as modern, comfortable, and designed to meet evolving passenger expectations.
The vehicles are fully air-conditioned and equipped with mobile-device charging ports, onboard display screens, reclining seats, and spacious luggage compartments.
“These buses have been customised to meet market demands and passenger needs. They provide greater comfort, convenience, and reliability for travellers,” he said.
The planned expansion is expected to strengthen Metro Mass Transit’s position as Ghana’s leading public transport operator while supporting the government’s broader objective of improving mobility and accessibility across the country.
