Three (3) people have been confirmed dead while 17 others were rescued following a fatal road accident at Woadze near Kpeve on the Kpeve–Asikuma Highway in the Volta Region.
The incident occurred on Friday, May 22, 2026, involving a Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle with registration number GR 8231 C travelling from Abotuase in the Volta Region to Ningo in the Greater Accra Region.
According to a statement issued on Monday, May 25, 2026, by the Volta Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), personnel from the Peki Fire Station received a distress call at about 9:58 a.m. and quickly responded to the accident scene.
The vehicle, which was carrying 20 passengers, was severely damaged in the crash. Occupants included 11 men, five women, and four children.
Fire officers, with support from personnel from the Ghana Police Service at the Kpando Divisional Command and the Ghana Ambulance Service from Afadjato and Juapong, carried out rescue operations to extricate victims trapped in the wreckage.
Seventeen (17) passengers, made up of 13 adults and four children, were successfully rescued.
However, two men and one woman lost their lives in the accident. Their bodies were retrieved from the scene by emergency responders.
The injured victims were transported to the Kpando Government Hospital and Peki Government Hospital for medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were conveyed to the same facilities for preservation.
Meanwhile, police have since launched investigations into the cause of the accident.
The GNFS has urged motorists to strictly observe road safety regulations and avoid excessive speeding to help reduce road crashes across the country.
