Traditional authorities at Aworowa in the Techiman North District, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), have cautioned residents against farming along the banks of the Addaisu and Subin rivers.
The warning follows concerns over increasing farming activities close to the two water bodies, which authorities say are contributing to the degradation of the riverbanks and threatening the sustainability of the rivers.
Speaking on the issue, Mr. Adamu Mohammed said a joint inspection team comprising officials from NADMO, traditional authorities and the Plant Protection Unit of the Department of Agriculture visited sections of the affected rivers.
Mr. Mohammed said the inspection revealed extensive cultivation along the riverbanks, raising concerns about the impact of farming activities on the condition of the water bodies.
He explained that farming too close to rivers can expose riverbanks to erosion and contribute to the gradual degradation of the surrounding environment.
According to him, the Techiman North NADMO is stepping up efforts to protect water bodies across the district through public education, engagement with traditional authorities and collaboration with relevant government agencies.
He appealed to chiefs, opinion leaders and residents to support the initiative by encouraging farmers to observe the required environmental protection measures.
Mr. Mohammed urged farmers to desist from cultivating along riverbanks and encouraged community members to help protect the rivers as important natural resources for present and future generations.
He stressed that safeguarding the water bodies requires the collective efforts of residents, traditional authorities, government agencies and other stakeholders.
