Bawku: 27-year-old man arrested for unlawful possession of assault rifle.

The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect for unlawful possession of an offensive weapon.

The 27-year-old suspect, Abdul Basit, was arrested on April 13, 2026, by a military patrol team during an operation around  Sakabo, a suburb of Bawku.

“The team, while on patrol, heard gunshots and proceeded to the location, where the suspect was seen running into a room”. He was pursued and arrested, and a search conducted in the room led to the retrieval of an AK-47 assault rifle with 31 rounds of ammunition.” they narrated.

A police source indicated that the suspect admitted ownership of the weapon during interrogation.

He is currently in police custody assisting investigations and will be put before court to face justice.
