A yam market has been officially opened at Asekye-Krukese, a suburb of Nkoranza in the Nkoranza North District of the Bono East Region, to ease the glut experienced by farmers during the yam season.
The chiefs of the Traditional Area, led by the Nkoranzamanhene, Nana Kwame Baffoe IV, and the Nkoranza North District Assembly opened the market, which had been abandoned for over 8 years.
At a durbar to mark the opening on Monday, October 26, 2026, Nana Akwasi Adjei III, who spoke on behalf of the Nkoranzamanhene, urged market leaders to liaise with their counterparts to find distribution outlets for yams produced in the area at competitive prices.
Speaking to Apiah-Kubi after the grand opening, the District Chief Executive for Nkoranza North, Hon. Effah Patrick, said the market is a significant project that will boost the Assembly’s Internally Generated Fund (IGF).
He said the market has become a major hub for yam trading, as Asekye-Krukese is a key marketing point for traders in the area.
He added that maize, groundnuts, and other farm produce will also be traded in the market.
He therefore urged traders who will patronise the market to live in peace with their hosts, expressing hope that the market marks the beginning of greater development.
Among the dignitaries present were the Member of Parliament for Nkoranza North, Hon. Joseph Kwasi Mensah, and the chiefs of Asekye, Krukese, Yefri, and Madina.
“The market was built during Hon. Dero’s time as MP, 8 years ago, but it was captured as part of the Assembly’s legacy projects and has now finally been opened,” Hon. Effah Patrick stated.
He expressed hope that the opening will help promote yams as a staple food in the area.
