President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Ghana Police Service for what he described as improvements in public safety, security and crime investigations.

He made the remarks on October 13, 2026, during the commissioning of a new 85-bed ward complex at the Ghana Police Hospital in Accra.

The facility is intended to expand the hospital’s capacity to provide healthcare to police personnel, their families and members of the general public.

President Mahama said improving healthcare infrastructure was an important part of efforts to strengthen the welfare of police officers, who often face significant physical and psychological demands in the course of their duties.

He stressed that officers injured during operations must receive timely and quality medical attention to support their recovery and enable them to return to their responsibilities where appropriate.

The President also urged the hospital’s management and staff to maintain high standards of hygiene, patient safety and professional care.

He emphasised the importance of properly maintaining the new facility and its equipment to ensure that the investment continued to benefit patients over the long term.

As part of measures to strengthen emergency response and healthcare delivery, President Mahama announced the donation of two new ambulances to the Police Hospital.

He further assured the Police Service of additional support, including the provision of an armoured vehicle and plans to expand facilities at the hospital.

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, welcomed the commissioning of the ward, describing it as a significant step towards improving healthcare for police personnel, their families and the general public.

He said the expanded capacity would help reduce the need to transfer patients to other health facilities and improve access to specialised medical care.

Mr Yohuno reaffirmed the Police Service’s commitment to maintaining the new facility and ensuring that it delivered quality healthcare to patients.

The commissioning forms part of broader efforts to improve the welfare and operational support available to police officers, whose work frequently exposes them to demanding and potentially dangerous situations.

The new ward is expected to contribute to the hospital’s capacity to accommodate patients and provide medical services to the police service and the wider public.
