President John Dramani Mahama has held discussions with the Managing Director of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Makhtar Diop, on strengthening Ghana’s economy through strategic partnerships and private-sector investment.

The meeting, held at the Presidency on Wednesday, focused on expanding investment in key productive sectors, including commercial agriculture, infrastructure, energy and education. The Presidency listed the engagement among its September 2026 updates.

A major area of discussion was the expansion of commercial agriculture, particularly in cocoa, oil palm and poultry. The two sides also discussed the government’s policy of increasing local processing, including a target of processing at least 50 per cent of Ghana’s cocoa beans and adding value to other agricultural and mineral resources locally.

Infrastructure development also featured prominently, with discussions covering the expansion of Ghana’s railway, aviation and road networks, as well as digital connectivity under the government’s Big Push Infrastructure Development programme. The meeting further considered challenges in the energy and education sectors.

President Mahama, accompanied by the Chief of Staff and the ministers responsible for finance, energy, and trade, outlined what the government described as improvements in Ghana’s economic conditions following fiscal and economic management measures.

The President also announced that Ghana had secured a US$300 million World Bank financing package to support efforts to phase out the double-track system in senior high schools by the end of 2027. The Presidency has separately confirmed that the financing is being used to expand infrastructure at overcrowded schools and construct new senior high schools as part of the effort to end double-track education.

Mr. Diop commended the President’s reform programme and expressed the IFC’s readiness to support Ghana’s commercial agriculture sector and broader efforts aimed at building a more resilient and sustainable economy.

The engagement forms part of the government’s efforts to attract strategic investment and partnerships to support economic transformation, infrastructure development and increased local value addition.
