The Central East Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) has arrested thirteen (13) drivers for unlawfully using sirens and emergency warning lights during a special road safety enforcement operation conducted along the Kasoa–Winneba Highway.
The exercise, carried out on May 30, 2026, at Budumburam in the Central Region, forms part of ongoing efforts by the Ghana Police Service to enforce road traffic regulations and promote discipline among motorists.
According to the Central East Regional Police Command, the drivers were found operating vehicles fitted with sirens and emergency lamps without the necessary legal authorisation.
During the operation, officers from the MTTD Task Force educated the offenders on the provisions of Regulations 65 and 74 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), which govern the use of warning devices and emergency lighting on vehicles.
Following the enforcement exercise, the unauthorised sirens and emergency lights were removed from the affected vehicles. The drivers were subsequently processed in accordance with the law, issued warning letters, and cautioned against repeating the offence.
Police officials noted that the misuse of sirens and emergency lights undermines road safety and can create unnecessary confusion for other road users, particularly when such devices are used by individuals who are not legally entitled to priority passage.
The Central East Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing road traffic laws and maintaining order on Ghana’s roads.
In a statement, the command emphasized that similar operations will continue across the region to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and enhance safety for all road users.
Authorities have urged motorists to adhere strictly to road traffic laws and to refrain from installing or using emergency equipment without proper authorization.
