The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested four suspects, including a juvenile, in connection with the murder of a couple at Kusanaba, a community within the Zebilla District of the Upper East Region.
The suspects, identified as Safianu Salam, Awal Salam, Jawal Salam, and a juvenile whose name has been withheld in accordance with legal provisions, were arrested at their hideout in Kugre near Garu on June 19, 2026.
According to preliminary police investigations, the incident occurred on June 10, 2026, when the deceased, Apam Azubilla, 45, and his wife, Apam Anomsigna, 35, were in their room when four armed men allegedly stormed the premises, attacked them and opened fire.
Police said Apam Azubilla reportedly shouted for help during the attack. His brother, Ayubugre Apam, who heard the distress call, rushed to the room and found the couple lying motionless in pools of blood.
The victims were immediately rushed to the Zegoyire Health Centre for medical attention. However, Apam Anomsigna was pronounced dead upon arrival. Apam Azubilla was subsequently referred to the Zebilla District Hospital but was also pronounced dead on arrival.
Medical examinations conducted on the bodies revealed multiple gunshot wounds.
The police further disclosed that the family of the deceased handed over three spent AK-47 ammunition shells recovered from the crime scene to investigators as part of the ongoing investigations.
The four suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations and are expected to be put before the court in the coming days.
The Upper East Regional Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to ensuring justice for the deceased and their family while continuing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
