Some traders in the Ho Main Market in the Volta Regional Capital have expressed their support for the 2020 running mate of the former President and the Flagbearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, to be selected again as the running mate for John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 election.
Speaking on Ho-based Swiss FM’s Morning Show (The Volta Express) on Monday, February 26, 2024, the traders believe that the former running mate stands another chance to become the running mate, all things being equal.
While urging the flagbearer, John Mahama, to choose Naana Opoku Agyemang ahead of any other names, the leadership stated that she is incorruptible and can best partner with the former President for victory in 2024, with high hopes of the NDC returning to power in the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
“If you recall Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, she was a lecturer who rose to the position of a professor, then Vice-Chancellor, and later Education Minister. She championed the building of E-Blocks for our SHS before the Nana Akuffo-Addo-led government came and dismantled everything in the country. Therefore, she is capable of supporting John Mahama to victory in 2024,” they emphasized.
Describing their call as non-partisan, they expressed concerns about the high cost of living in the country under the NPP-led administration.
They argued that a woman like the former first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Naana Jane, with her expertise and experience, could contribute significantly to the former President’s transformation agenda to revive the country’s economy.
Despite their strong advocacy, they clarified that they are not putting pressure on John Mahama but merely want him to consider their appeal to choose Naana Agyeman, stating that her region of birth does not concern their advocacy.
Mr. Godwin Asrah, a member and leader of the Used-Clothes sellers in the market, while appealing to the National Council of Elders of the NDC, stated that the legacies of Naana Opoku Agyemang are unmatched.
Therefore, she can do the same when chosen as a running mate because Ghana needs her type to lead the country as the Vice President of the republic.
“Despite Naana Jane not coming to share money with us, we believe things will be more manageable for us as traders in the country. We know what she can do as a woman with motherly love. Now, even clearing goods at the port is a big headache if you don’t take time. When a duty is mentioned, you may forget about the goods,” Mr. Asrah stated.
The leadership also welcomed and embraced the 24-Hour economy policy by the former President Mahama, which they believe is a good policy that Ghana needs to build the Ghana we want.
