The Managing Editor of Insight Newspaper, Mr. Kwesi Pratt Junior has noticed that, the way to depoliticize the Ghana Police service in order to function effectively is to provide the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and other top police officers security of tenure.

His observation follows the recent crime cases that have been on the rise in some parts of the capital, Accra, which most of the attacks have been on residents, mobile money vendors, forex bureaus and even on the Ghana police services themselves.

According to the ace journalist, over politicization of police service by changing Inspector General of Police anytime there is new president is taking negative toll on the professionalism of the service which in the final analysis  do not render quality service to Ghanaians
.
He explained that, since the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and other top officers know that if the government leaves power they will also leave office; they will do everything possible to ensure the government stays in power.

“Anytime there is new president, there is new IGP and indeed, even some of senior ranks below him, there is no security of tenure. Top Police Officers know if a government falls, they will fall with the government. So why won’t they do everything possible to ensure that the government in power stays? Why will this thing not lead to over politicization of the police service” he questioned.

Mr. Pratt argued why the state thinks it is important to provide security of tenure for the Chief Justice, head of Commission for Human Right and Administrative Justice (GHRAJ) and National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) but do not provide security of tenure for the head of the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ghana Prison Service.

He further opined that, the only way to depoliticize these institutions is to guarantee certain security of tenure for top officers in these institutions.

“If we want to depoliticize these institutions, is absolute important that the leadership these institutions are not political agents or agents of political parties. The only way to do that is to guarantee a certain security of tenure for the top people in these services and so on”
