One fowl sells Ghc130 due to high cost of poultry feed

High cost of poultry feeds has compelled poultry farmers in the Oti region to increase prices of chicken product during this festive season.

Inside Ghana News Service (IGNEWSS) search revealed that, a fowl sold for GHC70.00 last year (2021) will now be sold at GHC.130.00 according to some farmers.

This development is likely to make many families who depend on chicken products, especially within the Christmas and new year festivity, not to be able to afford the product as they did in the past.

Speaking to the 2022 Nkwanta South municipal best farmer, Obikyenobi Yaw Stephen and some other poultry farmers who raised broilers, cockerel and layers, they noted that, the over 100% increase in the cost of feed has made the year very challenging.

Mr Obikyenobi lamented that, prices of maize and soybeans that was sold around Gh¢ 210 and 130 now sells at 550 cedis.

Other farmers said, they struggled with the high cost in prices of maize, soybean and wheat to feed the birds and appealed to their customers to bear with them.

They further appealed to the government to consider them by subsidizing the feeds and other machineries to enable them produce more to ease the burden on importing from other countries.

Our visit to the market saw many consumers who have been window-shopping in some of the markets lamenting on the rate at which prices of various foodstuffs in the market have increased.

According to them, they will have no choice than to go for other protein foods which will enable them save money and enjoy the festive season.
