The Molex Foundation Africa has appealed to corporate organizations, development partners, philanthropists, government agencies and individuals to support its efforts to equip more young girls across Ghana with practical skills in robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
The Foundation is currently implementing an intensive robotics and STEM training program for young girls from various districts in the Central Region, with the ongoing program being hosted at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
The initiative is designed to provide participants with hands-on experience in technology, robotics, innovation and problem-solving while encouraging them to consider careers and further opportunities in STEM-related fields.
The program forms part of the foundation’s broader commitment to empowering young African women with the knowledge, confidence and technological skills required to participate meaningfully in the continent’s rapidly developing digital economy.
According to the foundation, the initiative is founded on the belief that every girl should have the opportunity to discover her potential, access technology and contribute to Africa’s technological advancement.
Speaking to the media, the President of Molex Foundation Africa, Dr. Patrick Essien, called on the government, corporate organizations, and individuals to partner with the foundation to expand the program and reach more girls across the country.
Dr. Essien said the foundation’s objective extends beyond a single training program, explaining that its long-term ambition is to nurture a generation of young women capable of using technology, innovation and creativity to identify and address challenges in their communities.
The practical training is enabling participants to develop skills in creativity, teamwork, critical thinking, innovation and problem-solving through hands-on robotics and STEM activities.
As part of the program’s holistic approach, Dr. Joana Akorfa Amuzu, a medical doctor at the 37 Military Hospital and a board member of Molex Foundation Africa, led a mentorship session focused on personal hygiene, determination, self-confidence and personal development.
Dr. Amuzu shared aspects of her personal journey with the girls, recounting how she overcame humble beginnings to become a medical doctor.
Her experience, she said, was intended to demonstrate to the participants that their present circumstances should not determine the limits of their ambitions.
She encouraged the girls to believe in themselves, remain determined and pursue their aspirations despite the challenges they may encounter.
The mentorship complemented the technical component of the programme by emphasising the importance of discipline, resilience, confidence and a strong sense of purpose alongside academic and technical knowledge.
Molex Foundation Africa believes that expanding access to STEM education for girls represents not only an investment in individual careers but also a strategic investment in Ghana’s and Africa’s technological future.
The Foundation is therefore seeking support in the form of funding, equipment, mentorship opportunities, institutional partnerships and other resources to expand its robotics, AI and STEM programs to more communities.
Particular emphasis is being placed on underserved communities where talented young girls may have limited access to technology and practical STEM education.
The Foundation says greater investment in girls’ access to technology and innovation can help create a generation of women who become engineers, scientists, doctors, entrepreneurs, technology professionals and community problem-solvers.
It has consequently called on stakeholders to support efforts to bridge the gender gap in STEM and ensure that young girls are not left behind in Africa’s technological transformation.
