Mercy Islamic school celebrates 20th anniversary, speech and prize giving day

Mercy Islamic Primary School, located at Lakeside in the Adentan Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, celebrated its 20th Anniversary Speech and Prize Day on Thursday, February 22, 2024.

The event aimed to acknowledge and appreciate the hard work of both pupils and teachers in the school.

Established in 1998 under the name NGO African Movement FMC by Direct Aid, the school later transformed into Mercy Social Center and eventually became a public school enrolled under the Ghana Education Service (GES) in 2004.

The ceremony encompassed a variety of activities, including prayers, Quran recitals, cadet and Scout inspections, poetry recitals, traditional dances, presentation of gifts and awards, as well as speeches from various dignitaries.

A notable highlight of the event was the impressive and outstanding performance by the school cadets during the parade, led by Ms. Leontine Otu, a French teacher in the school.

Distinguished speakers at the event included Hon. Daniel Alexander Nii-Noi Adumuah, former MCE for the Adenta Municipal Assembly, Ms. Gifty Mussey, Adentan Municipal Education Director, Mr. Sami Henedak Ahmed, Country Director of Direct Aid, and Mr. Yusif Ahmed, the Headteacher of Mercy Islamic Primary School.

During the ceremony, Direct Aid generously donated textbooks, exercise books, a printer, sets of school uniforms, and other teaching and learning materials to the school.

Awards were also presented to outstanding students and teachers in various categories, with Assistant Headteacher, Ms. Millicent Animah, receiving the most outstanding teacher award.

Direct Aid further contributed to the school’s infrastructure by constructing a six-unit classroom block, which was officially handed over to the school management.

The building was commissioned by Ms. Gifty Mussey, Municipal Education Director, and assisted by Mr. Sami Henedak Ahmed, Country Director of Direct Aid.

In attendance were esteemed guests, including the Country Director of Direct Aid, Mr. Sami Henedak Ahmed, Ms. Gifty Mussey, Adentan Municipal Education Director, Mr. Ali Abdul Salaam Ali, Center Director of Mercy Social Center, Hon. Alexander Nii-Noi Adumuah, former MCE for Adentan Municipal Assembly, Ms. Portia Edu-Essandoh, Adentan Municipal Deputy Director, Mr. Edem Agbenorku (a representative of Hon. Mohammed Adamu Ramadam, Adentan MP), Chiefs and members of the Muslim community, staff of the Education Directorate, parents, and well-wishers.
