Let’s depoliticize issues surrounding BoG – Majority Leader

The Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has asked for a depoliticization of the commentary surrounding the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

Commenting on the controversy surrounding the GH₵60.08 billion losses posted by the Bank in 2022, the Majority Leader said that all issues should not be about the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Responding to Minority leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson calls for the sacking of the Governor, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said, “Ato Forson should have known better because he has held the position of Deputy Minister of Finance before and knows the operations of the Bank of Ghana. So, if you politicise issues of the BoG, it is not good for the country.”

According to him, “There is no law that mandates the BoG to report its daily activities to Parliament. The Law only mandates the BoG to report foreign exchange receipts to Parliament and  BoG has always complied to this provision. The BoG does not report directly to Parliament.”

He opined that in discussing the issues around BoG, the Minority are either “over exaggerating issues or have not had time to examine the facts of the matter.”

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame also stated that the country has gone through some difficulties which required the BoG’s interventions.

He said, “If not the international reserves built by BoG, which was close to $10 billion, we would have really suffered. If not for the international reserves built by BoG, which was close to $10 billion, we would have really suffered. If the BoG supports the country to recover, it is unfair to call for the head of the governor because they made losses.”

He noted that these are issues which BoG has also come to Parliament to explain.

He also stated that the building of a new headquarters for the bank is crucial, as the current edifice is expected to house the headquarters of West African monetary zone, but this has not been possible due to the limited space at BoG.

This is something the new office building is expected to address, he indicated.
