IT’S POSSIBLE TO GIVE YOU MUNICIPAL, PREZ NANA AKUFO-ADDO ASSURES AKATSI DISTRICT

The president of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has promised the people of Akatsi North District in the Volta region to elevate the District Assembly to attain a Municipal status.

The president declared this at the grand durbar of the 30th anniversary celebration of the Akatsi North district Assembly at Akatsi, following a call from Togbe Dorglo Anumah VI, Paramount Chief and President of Avenor Traditional Council, to upgrade their current district status to a Municipality.

According to the president, checks from the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development shows that, the Akatsi District is qualified hence the request would be considered.

He noted that it is humanly possible and within his capacity as the president of the republic to upgrade the current District status of Akatsi to enhance development in the area.

He said, it is his hope that the next time of his visit to Akatsi will not be a visit to a district but a Municipality.

Togbe Anumah applauded the President for making the area a traditional council as he observed that he (the President) is a promise keeper.

According to Togbe, the Akatsi north as a district, has lots of challenges among which are good source of potable water and the fixing of bad roads in and around the district.

He also drew the attention of the President to an oil ridge discovered in the district some years ago and called on his administration to deploy expects to conduct more research into it for the drilling.

The District chief Executive, Hon. Leo-Nelson Adzidogah, in his speech registered gratitude to the President on behalf of the Akatsi North District for the social Intervention programmes the president has initiated to help the poor which according to him has affected every facet of lives in the district.

“we are thankful for the policy of planting for food and jobs has which has propelled Akatsi to become a leading rice producer in the region” he stated.

He also noted that, through the newly created ministry of Special Development Initiative, his District was given nine projects which include mechanized borehole fitted with solar panel and some public and institutional toilets.

“The implementation of these policies and programmes does not exclude Akatsi South District, we are the biggest beneficiaries” he added

He therefore appeal to the President to construct Assembly complex to accommodate all decentralized departments scattered in the Akatsi township, complete the District hospital into a fully-fledged hospital, modernization of Avenorpeme Youth and Leadership Training Institute, modernization of Akatsi central market, Provision of social amenities including portable water, good road network, educational infrastructure, health facilities, and Mini-Markets in the communities, installation of traffic light at the crossing sections in the central business District and construction of District Police Command Post to serve as a decent office and residential accommodation for police personnel. 

Background

The Akatsi District was carved out of the Ketu district in 1989 and became a District with its capital at Akatsi

Over the years till 2012, the populations of the Akatsi District increased as well as other factors which pointed out that, the Akatsi District needed to be worked on in terms of administration.

After 23 years out of Ketu, the District split into Akatsi North and Akatsi south with their capitals at Akatsi and Ave-Dakpa respectively.

This is 2019, the year that marked a 30-year journey from 1989

The 30thanniversary celebration aimed at taking stock of the developmental achievements and setbacks of the Assembly since its inception, celebrating and honoring the builders and key performing personalities that have been very instrumental in the establishment and development of the district and charting a path for a better future for the district.

The anniversary was celebrated under the theme “consolidating the gains of local Governance through unity in purpose and visionary leadership”
