The Ho Central Constituency National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate, Hon. Edem Richmond Kofi Kpotosu, joined the Youth of Sokode Gbogame on Monday for their maiden Homecoming celebration aimed at empowering education among the residents.
The Homecoming, celebrated under the theme “Empowering Education and Skills for Development and Growth of our Community,” aimed to raise Fifty Thousand Ghana Cedis (Ghc50,000) to kickstart phase one of an educational support project, tentatively scheduled to commence in September of this year.
This project also includes plans for the construction of a modern resource center in the community, intended to facilitate modern ICT teaching and learning for the elementary school children in Gbogame and its neighboring towns within Sokode.
In his address at the gathering, the Parliamentary Candidate, who is also a resident, commended the youth for their commitment to advancing education in the area and pledged his full support to the project.
As the Human Resource Manager at the Volta Regional Education Directorate, he noted that the youth’s initiative aligns with his own educational plans and urged parents to prioritize their children’s education to ensure that Gbogame produces more literate individuals in the near future, thereby enabling the youth and the community to achieve their intended goals.
Mr. Kpotosu, who pledged Gh¢5,000 as seed money for the youth to initiate the project, also disclosed plans to support an apprenticeship program aimed at enrolling some youth into free vocational skills training in the community, with the goal of enhancing self-employment and job creation.
Expressing his optimism about his prospects of becoming the next Member of Parliament for Ho Central Constituency, he urged the community to support his candidacy in the upcoming December 7 general election by casting their votes for him and John Dramani Mahama.
Mr. Winfred Afesorgbor, President of the Accra chapter of the Sokode Gbogame Youth Association, assured the gathering that the project has already secured sponsors awaiting the commencement of the initiative.
He also urged parents to remain vigilant, particularly regarding LGBTQ issues and other deviant behaviors, such as the use of hard drugs, in Senior High Schools (SHS) and Secondary Technical Schools (SHTS).
He lamented that such issues could undermine the progress of the youth’s community development initiative and advocated for the introduction of punitive measures to deter students from engaging in such behaviors.
