The Volta Regional office of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the commencement of the 2024 compliance enforcement exercise scheduled for March 2024 across the region.
The purpose of the exercise is to ensure that all activities adhere to the provisions outlined in the Environmental Protection Agency Act, 1994 (Act 490), Environmental Assessment Regulations, 1999 (LI 1652), Fee and Charges (Miscellaneous Provision) Act, 2022 (Act 1080), Hazardous and Electronic Waste Control and Management Act, 2016 (Act 917), and Hazardous Electronic and other Wastes (Classification), and Control and Management Regulations, 2016 (LI 2250).
The Agency emphasized that both government and privately-owned undertakings that have commenced construction without an Environmental Permit/License, are operating without one, or are operating with an expired permit/license, as well as those operating in non-compliance with an Environmental Permit/License Schedule, should promptly visit the Agency’s Office in Ho to regularize their activities.
The statement, signed by the Regional Director, Mr. Hope Smith Lomotey, further informs the public that enforcement notices have been issued to some facilities, and these processes are currently ongoing.
It stresses that failure by any individual or entity to comply with this public notice or any other notice or directive served by the Agency will result in the closure of the facility and subsequent prosecution.
