The Bono Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Police Service has arrested two (2) suspects for alleged unlawful possession of narcotic and restricted drugs at Kumi Daa Street (KDS), a suburb of the Dormaa Central Municipality in the Bono Region.
In a statement signed by Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, Public Relations Officer of the Bono Regional Police Command, the two (2), a 66-year-old woman, Mary Awuni and her 29-year-old son, Maxwell Akukah, were arrested during an intelligence-led operation conducted by the police, which resulted in the recovery of suspected narcotic and restricted substances from their rooms.
Bono Regional Police Command said a search of the rooms led to the retrieval of 147 yellow compressed slabs wrapped in sellotape, suspected to be Indian hemp, as well as 270 boxes and 329 blisters of assorted Tramadol.
The operation also resulted in the recovery of 14 blisters of Rohypnol, GH¢87,751 and CFA 2,000.
Police said Mary Awuni was found with a metal trunk containing the 14 blisters of Rohypnol, GH¢72,612 and CFA 2,000.
During questioning, she allegedly claimed that the items and money had been given to her by a man in Accra for onwards delivery to another person in Côte d’Ivoire.
She, however, admitted ownership of the items found in her room.
Her son, Maxwell Akukah, was also arrested in a separate room where suspected Indian hemp, Tramadol and GH¢15,139 were found.
Maxwel reportedly told investigators that the items belonged to his brother, Anthony, who was said to be outside Dormaa Ahenkro at the time of the operation.
The two suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with investigations as the police work towards identifying and prosecuting persons found culpable.
The Bono Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating narcotics-related offences and urged members of the public to continue providing credible information to assist the police in protecting communities and maintaining public safety.
