The former Volta Regional Commander of Prisons, Deputy Director of Prisons Martin Kwesi Darku has said that, everybody regardless of their social status, can end up in prison and as such, good care, love, support and other necessities in making inmates comfortable should always be an option for Ghanaians.
“The prison is meant for everybody, and not for only one man. You are a driver today and anything at all can happen that will end you up in prison, so if you prepare the place before coming to the prison then you will enjoy it but if the place is bad, you will also come and suffer like that, so everybody should come on board” he said.
He called on all well-meaning Ghanaians to always consider supporting the prison, especially the inmates as the conditions there are very different.
Mr. Darku said this at a pull-out & send-off ceremony in his honour at the Ho Central Prison yard as he bows out after 31 years of dedicated service to the Ghana Prison Service and Mother Ghana.
DDP Darku noted that government alone cannot do it, therefore, there is the need for everyone to come on board.
He urged his fellow officers to remain disciplined and resilient in discharging their duties as Prison Officers with patience, determination and hard work to reach greater heights.
He was recruited into the Ghana Prison Service on August 6, 1992 as a member of the 95th Recruit Course, which was a special recruitment by the Service to enlist Construction Technicians.
He served in many capacities in various prisons to become a Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP).
He was promoted to Deputy Director of Prisons on 1st January 2021 and was appointed as the Volta Regional Commander of Prisons in May 2021.
Some of his achievements are, the establishment of a Health Center for the Ho Central Prison, establishment of a Barbering Shop to enable inmates gain skills for life after prison and had started negotiations to acquire a farm land which will be used as a Camp Prison for the Service among others.
