The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Centre for Posterity Interest Organisation (COPIO), Mr. Mustapha Yeboah Maison, has commended the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) for seizing quantities of an unregistered confectionery product designed in the shape of cigarettes from traders in Accra’s Central Business District.
The product, branded “Cigarette Rod Lollipop”, was seized during an operation conducted by the FDA in collaboration with National Security over the weekend.
One person was arrested in connection with the sale of the product and is currently in police custody assisting with investigations into its importation, distribution and sale.
Commenting on the development in an interview on Bonokyempem Radio’s Evening News, Mr. Mustapha Yeboah Maison described the FDA’s intervention as timely and necessary, particularly in protecting consumers and ensuring that products introduced onto the Ghanaian market meet the required safety and regulatory standards.
Mr. Yeboah Maison commended the FDA and the security agencies for their collaboration and called for sustained monitoring of the market to prevent unregistered and potentially inappropriate products from being imported, distributed or sold to consumers.
He urged the relevant authorities to intensify surveillance and enforcement efforts, particularly at points where such products enter and circulate within the country.
The COPIO Chief Executive Officer also called for stronger enforcement of Ghana’s trading and consumer protection laws, saying importers, distributors and retailers must comply fully with the regulatory requirements governing products sold on the Ghanaian market.
He said effective enforcement of the laws would help protect consumers while ensuring that businesses operating in the country adhere to established safety and regulatory standards.
