The Ghana Police Service has brought under control a violent incident in New Winneba in the Central Region after a large group of armed persons reportedly stormed the township and attacked residents and damaged properties.
According to the police, the incident occurred at about 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when about 300 irate persons allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze entered the New Winneba Township.
The police said the group attacked natives and caused damage to shops, residences and other properties.
A statement signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Central Region, Chief Inspector Isaac Evans Ettie, said about 15 injured persons had been sent to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical attention.
The injured include a police officer, while three people have been confirmed dead, according to the Police.
Police Deploy Reinforcements
Police personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols have been deployed to the affected areas to restore and maintain order.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has also directed the deployment of additional personnel, including two armoured vehicles from the Police National Headquarters, to reinforce security operations in the area.
The police said the reinforcement was intended to strengthen security and prevent further escalation of the violence.
Situation Under Control
The Police Service said the situation was currently under control and assured residents and the general public that security personnel remained deployed to maintain peace and protect lives and property.
The service said further details concerning the incident would be communicated to the public as investigations and security operations continued.
The police have urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel as efforts continue to stabilise the situation.
