The Ghana Police Service has intercepted 1,054 vehicles in the Greater Accra Region during an ongoing nationwide enforcement exercise targeting the unauthorised use of sirens, strobe lights, beacon lights, modified horns and illegal vehicle alterations.
The operation forms part of a broader campaign to enforce compliance with Ghana’s Road Traffic Regulations and improve safety on the country’s roads.
According to the Police Service, drivers found violating the regulations were educated on the applicable provisions of the law, while unauthorised devices and illegal vehicle modifications were removed and confiscated for further action.
The enforcement exercise targets offences including the unlawful use of emergency sirens, strobe and beacon lights, improvised vehicle modifications, and other equipment reserved for authorised emergency and security services.
Police said the exercise, which began on June 15, 2026, has so far led to the interception of 4,627 vehicles nationwide, with Greater Accra accounting for 1,054 of the total.
The service said the operation is intended to promote discipline among motorists, enhance road safety, and ensure strict adherence to traffic regulations.
It noted that the misuse of emergency warning devices by unauthorised motorists poses risks to other road users, undermines traffic management, and can impede genuine emergency response operations.
The Ghana Police Service assured the public that the enforcement exercise will continue across all regions of the country as part of sustained efforts to improve compliance with road traffic laws.
Motorists have been urged to refrain from installing or using unauthorised sirens, beacon lights, strobe lights, modified horns, and other prohibited accessories on their vehicles, warning that offenders will face the appropriate sanctions under the law.
The police service reiterated its commitment to working with the public to promote safer roads and maintain discipline within Ghana’s transport system.
