57% of Ghana’s Mobile Business Operators Earn Below GH₵100 Daily

Roughly 57.1% of mobile business operators in Ghana generate less than GH₵100 in daily income, according to recent figures published by the Ghana Statistical Service through its Integrated Business Establishment Survey (IBES), underscoring pronounced income fragilities within the segment.

The report further reveals that despite the widespread presence of mobile enterprises—estimated at 82,920 operators nationwide—revenues remain largely at subsistence levels, raising questions about their viability and efficiency.

The sector is also predominantly driven by young people, with nearly 60% of operators falling within the 15 to 34 age bracket. This highlights mobile trading as a major source of employment, particularly in urban areas where access to formal jobs remains limited.

Additional data show that 85.2% of mobile enterprises are involved in the sale of goods, indicating a strong bias towards retail trade. This category is often marked by stiff competition and thin profit margins, factors that continue to suppress income expansion.

Female participation remains dominant, with women accounting for 77.5% of operators, suggesting that the income challenges observed in the sector largely impact women-led economic activities.

The data point to enduring structural bottlenecks within Ghana’s informal economy. Although mobile businesses play a vital role in facilitating everyday trade and last-mile distribution—especially in regions such as Greater Accra Region and Ashanti Region—they are still constrained by limited access to credit, inadequate infrastructure, and weak linkages to formal trading systems.

Closing these gaps through deliberate policy measures—including improved access to microfinance, increased adoption of digital payment solutions, and enhanced capacity-building initiatives—will be key to boosting productivity and enabling young entrepreneurs to transition into more resilient and scalable ventures.
