The Volta North Regional Police Command has rescued an eight-month-old baby who was allegedly abducted at Kpando Market in the Volta Region.
The police have also secured the conviction of Stella Amodzorme, 31, who was sentenced to three (3) years imprisonment with hard labour for abducting the child.
According to a police statement issued on August 5, 2026, the incident was reported on July 17 by the baby’s mother, Gloria Xagbe, 21.
The mother told Police that she had briefly left her eight-month-old daughter in the care of a female market trader while she went to purchase packaging bags.
When she returned, however, the child and the woman who had been looking after her were nowhere to be found.
Police said they subsequently arrested Stella Amodzorme on July 18 at Toviave, following intelligence-led investigations.
Preliminary investigations established that Amodzorme allegedly abducted the child and took her to Kpando.
She reportedly told investigators that she acted on the instructions of her fiancé, who is currently at large.
The suspect was arraigned before the Kpando Circuit Court on July 20, 2026, and was remanded into police custody.
She subsequently pleaded guilty when she appeared before the court on August 3 and was sentenced to three years in prison with hard labour.
Meanwhile, the police successfully located and rescued the eight-month-old child unharmed.
The Volta North Regional Police Command said efforts are continuing to apprehend the suspect’s fiancé, who is believed to have played a role in the alleged abduction.
The Command has urged parents and guardians to exercise greater caution when leaving children in the care of other persons, particularly in crowded public places.
It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and ensuring the safety of children and other vulnerable members of society.
