The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police in the Volta region have embarked on a road clean up exercise to arrest drivers and riders operating without required driving documents.
The exercise which, according to the command, aimed at enforcing driver and riders to obey the use of lawful documents is also in quest of enforcing to ensure an enhanced perfect road safety observation on roads across the region.
Sources said, Police have so far arrested some taxi drivers and tricycle popularly called “Mahama Can Do” riders without or expired Licenses, Insurances, road worthy and other driving documents..
The operation carried out on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, at some vantage points within the regional capital, Ho, saw a total of twenty (20) drivers and riders who have not possessed the requisite documents.
Police also arrested drivers and riders who have such documents but do not have them in their cars while driving at the time of the operation, an action tantamount to unlawful driving.
Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr Stephen Delaporte, Volta Regional MTTD Commander, disclosed to Inside Ghana News Service (IGNEWSS) that the operation is supposed to be a monthly exercise on the roads across the region but due to some major activities that takes them out from office for other assigned duties, it delays their planned operations.
He mentioned activities such as traffic directing at festivals, presidential tours and re-enforcement duties to some dispute communities among others as some duties that always take them off this important operation.
He further revealed that the Tuesday’s operation undertaken by the police later released some drivers who have genuine documents but did not carry them in their vehicle after they produced them for inspection.
He noted that, drivers and riders who do not have the required documents and those with expired ones will be made to face the law.
Police are screening offenders to prepare their charge documents and arrange them for court latest by Thursday to face the law.
