The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Benadak Herbal Medicine Research Centre, T. Dr Benjamin Tutu, has urged pharmacists to adopt a more investigative and analytical approach to patient care by studying individual cases and conducting research that can lead to better and more effective treatment outcomes.

The call was made during the Annual General Conference and Drug Safety Campaign organised by the Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation-Ghana at the University of Ghana, Legon, under the theme, “Building Healthier Communities Through Drug Safety, Digital Innovation and Substance Control.”

Dr Tutu encouraged students to distinguish themselves in the profession by questioning assumptions, investigating patient conditions, analysing available information and experimenting responsibly to generate new knowledge.

He urged pharmacists and other health professionals to keep proper records of patients who visit health facilities for particular products or treatments.

Such records, he said, could help identify similarities and differences in patients with comparable conditions and provide a basis for further research.

He said closer examination of patients could also help researchers identify differences in body responses and other factors that may influence treatment outcomes.

The speaker cautioned pharmacists against relying solely on general treatment standards when administering medicines.

He noted that although age, gender and a patient’s health condition may provide useful guidelines for determining treatment and dosage, they should not be treated as the only basis for making decisions.

He therefore urged pharmacists to continually monitor and supervise patients to determine how they respond to treatment.

Addressing the students, he encouraged them to become exceptional pharmacists by developing the habit of investigating cases rather than simply relying on assumptions.

“Do not just assume but be critical, investigate, analyse and experiment to be able to come out with unique outcomes that will make you exceptional pharmacists,” he said.
