The newly inaugurated Chairman of the Governing Board of Asuansi Technical Institute (ASUTECH), Dr. Patrick Essien, has called for increased investment in the institution, describing it as a historic pillar of technical education in Ghana that requires sustained support to meet the country’s growing demand for skilled professionals.

Speaking after his inauguration, Dr. Essien said ASUTECH occupies a unique place in Ghana’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) landscape and should receive the attention needed to strengthen its capacity and preserve its legacy.

“ASUTECH represents the foundation of technical education in Ghana. We must ensure that this historic institution receives the attention, investment, and support required to continue producing the skilled workforce needed for national transformation,” he said.

Dr. Essien said collaboration among government, industry, alumni, development partners and other stakeholders would be essential to advancing the institute’s development agenda and expanding opportunities for technical education.

The inauguration of the new Governing Board brought together traditional authorities, education officials, political leaders, alumni, staff, students and development partners, who reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the growth of technical and vocational education in the country.

Dr. Essien acknowledged the infrastructure challenges facing the institution and stressed the need for coordinated efforts to improve teaching and learning facilities, strengthen practical training, and create an environment that promotes innovation and entrepreneurship.

He said stronger partnerships between academia and industry would help bridge the skills gap by aligning training with labour market demands while equipping graduates with competencies required for the modern workplace.

According to him, investment in technical and vocational education remains critical to Ghana’s industrialisation agenda, employment creation and long-term economic development.

ASUTECH Principal, Mr. Ishmael Arthur congratulated the newly inaugurated Board and expressed confidence in its ability to provide strategic leadership to address the institution’s development priorities and enhance its standing within Ghana’s TVET sector.

Under Dr. Essien’s leadership, the Board has pledged to prioritise good governance, accountability, infrastructure development, industry collaboration and academic excellence as part of efforts to strengthen the institution’s role in technical education.

ASUTECH, regarded as Ghana’s first technical institution and one of the pioneers of technical education in West Africa, has played a significant role in training skilled professionals for decades. The new board is expected to steer the institute through a new phase of institutional development and growth.
