Collaborate with police to curb excessive road accidents – Public urged

Ghana Police Service (GPS) has cautioned the general public, especially road users, to pay much attention to traffic regulations and other safety support element on the road during this yuletide.

Study conducted by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police service has it that the country recorded more road crashes this year between November and December mostly on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and at times Mondays between the hours of 2pm and 10pm.

Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr Stephen Delaporte, Volta Regional MTTD Commander, disclosed to Inside Ghana News Service (IGNEWSS) that, it is their duty to ensure traffic laws are strictly observed by all road users.

According to him, drivers in the Volta region are gradually complying with the traffic regulations hence the region has seen improvement especially on road carnages in the year 2022 as compared to the previous years.

Fixing issues of police extorting

Mr. Delaporte noted that public allegation on issues of police extorting money from driver on the road has reached their attention and the regional command is putting up measures to check and correct them.

He added that, their presence on the road purposely concerned the safety of drivers and their passengers therefore officers are to check drivers’ licenses, insurances, spare tires, fire extinguishers and road worthy of vehicles but not to extort money from drivers.

Carrying the necessary documents

The MTTD commander further advised drivers to go along with original copies of their driving documents just as the law requires at all times.

He said drivers should desist from loading on the canopies of vehicles which have no carriers stressing that, it is an offense contrary to the road traffic laws of the country.

Speaking on phone while using the road can be dangerous

He urged road users, mainly pedestrians, to always pay much attention to the road and remember to face an incoming vehicle at all times to know what is ahead.

He underscored dangers of speaking on mobile phones whiles using the road and advised all road users to avoid such acts.

Creation of healthy relationship with police personnel

Chief Supt. Delaporte urged the public to create good rapport with police officers on the road and avoid unnecessary confrontations that leads to exchanges of words with officers on our roads.

Reporting issue of reckless driving

He however called on the public to continue reporting issues of reckless driving exhibited by some drivers to the command for necessary actions.
