The Department of Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service in Nkoranza South, in the Bono East Region, has joined the global community to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child with an inspiring event aimed at empowering young girls and promoting their health, especially regarding breast cancer.

Held at Nkwabeng, a suburb of Nkoranza, on Friday, October 31, 2025, the program brought together schoolgirls, teachers, parents, and stakeholders to interact with female students to discuss breast cancer awareness.

The event saw dignitaries, including the Deputy Bono East Regional Director of the Ghana TVET Service, the Ghana Health Directorate, parents, and stakeholders within the Nkwabeng community.

The health service team educated the girls on breast cancer signs, self-examination techniques, and detection methods.

The Deputy Bono East Regional Director of the Ghana TVET service, Mr. Edmund Pinto, emphasized the department’s commitment to ensuring that girls within the municipality are given advocates on breast cancer, its causes, effects, and impact.

“As part of taking part in the International Day of the Girl Child, we decided to create awareness on breast cancer; the schoolgirls’ health also matters, and therefore we aim at shaping them in terms of health issues,” Mr. Pinto expressed.

Mr. Pinto opined that early detection can also help in early prevention.

The Gender Desk Officer and Corporate Affairs Officer for Ghana TVET service in the Bono East Region, Mavis Akua Adjei, emphasized the theme for the celebration, “The Girl I Am, the Change I Lead: Empowering Girls through TVET,” focused on breast cancer awareness.

She noted that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and therefore the institution decided to use the opportunity to create the awareness.

“Globally, breast cancer is killing a lot of women, so it is best that at this stage we educate our women to be aware,” Mavis Akua Adjei stated.

She added that the TVET service is envisioned to create productive girls in the country as well as provide talents and skills for Ghana.

The program ended with a free screening for the girls on breast cancer and an interactive dialogue session where students expressed gratitude for the lessons shared and pledged to be ambassadors of positive change in their schools and communities.

The event inspired confidence, created awareness among participants, and reaffirmed TVET service’s dedication to promoting equality, education, and empowerment for girls across the country.
