A 32-year-old teacher at Logba Akusame-Vuinta D/A Junior High School in the Afadzato South District of the Volta Region, Madam Lydia Agbosu, is appealing for financial assistance to undergo an urgent hip replacement surgery estimated to cost GH¢100,000.
Madam Agbosu, who teaches English Language and Religious and Moral Education, is calling on the government, benevolent organisations, churches, philanthropists and the general public to support her medical treatment.
She is reportedly battling end-stage osteoarthritis of the left hip joint and necrosis of the head of the left femur, conditions that have left her in severe pain and significantly limited her mobility.
Speaking in an interview with Ho-based Stone City FM, Madam Agbosu disclosed that she has sickle cell disease, genotype SC, which has further complicated her health challenges.
She said her hip problems began during her teacher training days when she experienced what she described as a dislocation while alighting from a motorbike on her way to school during her teaching practice.
According to her, the condition has persisted for years and deteriorated considerably since she was posted to Logba Akusame-Vuinta in 2016.
Despite trying both traditional and orthodox treatments, she said her condition has not improved, leaving her dependent on painkillers to manage the discomfort and continue teaching.
Her daily commute of about 20 kilometres by car or motorbike to school has also become increasingly difficult because of her limited mobility.
Madam Agbosu is one of only four teachers at the school, a situation she says makes it difficult for her to stay away from work without affecting teaching and learning.
She explained that she continues to report for duty and participate in teaching and the assessment of pupils despite the pain.
The teacher said she formally notified the Afadzato South District Directorate of Education about her condition at the end of the previous semester. Her headteacher also wrote to the Directorate on the matter, but she said she was yet to receive a response that could help address her situation.
Efforts to raise funds through the local zonal branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), which designed a flyer to solicit public support, have yielded GH¢2,700 so far, far below the amount required for the surgery.
Madam Agbosu said she had sought medical attention at the Volta Regional Hospital in Hohoe before being referred to Kpando for further tests and subsequently to Ridge Hospital in Accra.
She said doctors advised her to undergo hip replacement surgery as soon as possible to prevent further deterioration of the joint.
With the pain becoming increasingly unbearable, she is appealing for urgent financial assistance to enable her to undergo the procedure and return to a healthier life.
Members of the public who wish to support her can contribute through mobile money numbers 0543595465 and 0536337714
Madam Agbosu is hopeful that support from individuals, institutions and organisations will help her raise the GH¢100,000 needed for her surgery.
