The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested four (4) suspects and seized 142 parcels of suspected Indian hemp following an intelligence-led operation along the Bimbilla-Tamale road.
The operation, conducted by the Command’s Special Operations Team, known as Red Maria, also saw officers reject an alleged GH¢50,000 bribe offered by the suspects.
According to a police press release dated Friday, October 16, 2026, the operation took place on Thursday, October 15, at about 6:30 p.m., when the team intercepted a mini commercial van travelling from Bimbilla to Tamale.
The vehicle, with registration number GW 7800-14, was being driven by 46-year-old Alhassan Zeblim, who was suspected of transporting narcotic substances.
A search of the vehicle uncovered 142 compressed parcels of suspected Indian hemp concealed in four jute sacks commonly known as Ghana Must Go bags.
Police said the driver identified 34-year-old Ibrahim Yussif, a tricycle rider in Tamale, as the intended recipient of the consignment.
Ibrahim later arrived at an agreed location in the company of his 56-year-old brother, Bawa Yussif. Mohammed Haruna, 32, who was subsequently identified as the owner of the consignment, was also arrested.
The police said the suspects allegedly offered the arresting officers GH¢50,000 in an attempt to influence the operation, but the officers rejected the offer.
All four suspects, together with the exhibits, including a tricycle, have been handed over to the Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit for further investigation.
The Northern Regional Police Command commended the officers for their swift response and integrity, urging personnel across the region to maintain similar standards of professionalism in the fight against crime.
The arrests form part of efforts by the police to combat the transportation and distribution of suspected narcotic substances in the region.
