The Minister of Education has directed the immediate suspension of the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, and ordered a police investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct involving a female student.
The Ministry of Education said in a statement dated October 13 that its attention had been drawn to an investigation by JoyNews and Manasseh Azure Awuni into the allegations at the school in the Ashanti Region.
According to the statement signed by Hashmin Mohammed, press secretary to the Ministry of Education, the minister considers the matter serious and has instructed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take immediate steps to suspend Abdulai pending a full investigation.
The minister has also requested the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters to commence investigations into the matter.
The ministry and the GES said they would not tolerate or condone alleged misconduct of this nature in any educational institution in the country.
The statement further stressed that parents and guardians entrust their children to teachers with the expectation that they will protect and safeguard them rather than abuse them.
However, the allegations remain subject to investigation, and any determination of criminal liability will depend on the outcome of the investigative and judicial processes.
