Dangote Group President and African business magnate Aliko Dangote has praised President John Dramani Mahama for Ghana’s rapid economic recovery, saying the turnaround was driven by restoring trust and making the right policy decisions.
Dangote made the remarks on Monday, September 21, 2026, at the “Accra Reset: Full Circle – Making Global Development Work Again” event in New York, held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
According to the billionaire businessman, Ghana’s recent economic performance highlights the crucial relationship between investor confidence and economic growth.
“I want to commend President Mahama for turning around the economy of Ghana in a very short time. This has actually shown that money follows trust,” he said
“That is why people have trust in him, and that is why Ghana’s economy turned around,” Dangote added.
He subsequently congratulated President Mahama for the economic progress recorded under his administration.
“Your Excellency, I must really congratulate you,” he said.
He added: “He didn’t do any magic. He’s not a magician, but he did the right things, and people really have a lot of trust in him. And that’s why Ghana’s economy turned around. This has actually shown that money follows trust.”
Dangote argued that investors are more willing to commit funds when they trust a country’s leadership and have confidence in its economic direction.
He said Ghana’s experience shows how rebuilding confidence can contribute to a relatively quick improvement in economic conditions, particularly when supported by sound policy decisions.
The comments come as the Mahama administration promotes what it describes as economic stabilisation under its Resetting Ghana Agenda.
The government has pointed to falling inflation, gains in the value of the cedi, improved fiscal performance and stronger international reserves as evidence of the recovery.
When President Mahama took office in January 2025, Ghana was dealing with major economic difficulties, including elevated inflation and weakened investor confidence.
Since then, official data and independent assessments have recorded improvements across several macroeconomic indicators, including economic growth, currency performance and fiscal conditions.
Dangote’s comments add to growing international interest in Ghana’s economic trajectory and the role of investor confidence in sustaining the recovery.
The Accra Reset event was part of the government’s broader engagement with international partners, investors and development stakeholders on Ghana’s economic and development priorities.
For Ghana to sustain the gains, however, continued structural reforms, fiscal discipline and consistent economic policies will remain important.
