The Upper East Regional Police Command has retrieved weapons and motorbikes during a follow-up operation targeting a robbery gang linked to a series of attacks on motorbike riders and mobile money vendors across parts of the region.
The gang is suspected to have carried out robbery attacks in Benaba, Binduri, Pusiga, Garu, Zebilla and surrounding communities.
A police source said the operation took place at Tilly Forest, where some of the suspects led officers to a location where they had indicated that their weapons had been concealed.
According to the police, the team came under gunfire while conducting the operation, resulting in gunshot injuries to three suspects: Amadu Apiiga, Philip Vokbilla and Bilal Adabode, alias Sulley.
The three (3) were subsequently conveyed to a hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.
The police said other individuals believed to have sustained gunshot wounds during the incident fled the scene.
Two police officers were also injured during the operation and are receiving medical attention.
Weapons and Motorbikes Recovered
Items retrieved during the operation consist of two locally manufactured single-barrel guns, two pistols, including a BRUNI 92 pistol and 11 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
The police also recovered 18 BB live cartridges, three sharp cutlasses, four unregistered Yamaha Aerox scooters, a pair of black boots, a motorbike number plate and two mobile phones.
The suspects have also been linked to the murder of a police officer during a robbery attack at Zebilla on February 8, 2026, according to the police.
6 Suspects Remain in Custody
Police said six other members of the gang who were arrested earlier remain in custody and are assisting with investigations.
Efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other suspected members of the gang and establish the source of the weapons used in the alleged robbery operations.
The police have appealed to members of the public to report anyone found with suspected gunshot wounds to the nearest police station to assist ongoing investigations.
The Command said investigations into the activities of the suspected gang are continuing.
