The Central Regional Police Command has arrested six suspects in connection with the violent attack and rioting that occurred at New Winneba on September 1, 2026.
The suspects are Kweku Kakraba, 52, Arko Thomas, 19, Samuel Tulasi, 19, Samuel Gyasi, 22, Emmanuel Okyere, 22, and Seth Osei, 22.
They are currently in police custody assisting with investigations into the incident.
According to a press release issued by the Central Regional Police Command, the incident occurred at about 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, when about 300 people allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze stormed New Winneba Township.
The group reportedly attacked residents and caused damage to shops, houses and other properties.
The police said about 15 people, including a police officer, sustained injuries during the attack and were transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment.
Three people were also confirmed dead by the medical officer on duty, the statement said.
Police Recover Gun and Cartridge
The police further disclosed that investigators retrieved one locally manufactured single-barrel gun and one AAA empty cartridge from the scene.
Following the incident, personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters, Agona Swedru Division and Mankessim Division were deployed to reinforce security operations in the area.
The Inspector-General of Police also deployed a special team, supported by two armoured vehicles from the Police National Headquarters, to strengthen security and prevent further escalation.
Six Snap Checkpoints Mounted
As part of measures to maintain peace and prevent further attacks, the police said six snap checkpoints had been mounted in the area.
Day and night patrols have also been intensified, while personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have been deployed to monitor developments.
The police said the area remained calm and that the situation was currently under control.
Six Suspects in Custody
The six suspects arrested in connection with the violence remain in police custody as investigations continue.
The police have assured the public that further information will be communicated as investigations progress.
