The Savannah Regional Police Command has arrested two persons in connection with the alleged lynching of a young man at Daboya in the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region.
The suspects, identified as 25-year-old carpenter Adjei Abdulai and 22-year-old student Issah Mahama, were arrested following preliminary investigations into the incident, which was captured on video and subsequently circulated on social media.
According to the police, the victim, identified as Yibonwura, was allegedly attacked and severely assaulted after he was accused of stealing sheanuts.
He reportedly sustained serious injuries during the assault and subsequently died from the injuries.
The police said the two suspects are currently in custody and assisting with investigations as efforts continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
A third suspect, who is believed to have been involved in the incident, remains at large, and the police have launched a manhunt to apprehend him.
The Savannah Regional Police Command said investigations are ongoing to identify all persons connected to the alleged crime and ensure that those found culpable are brought before the law.
The Command has also urged members of the public to cooperate with investigators by providing credible information that could assist in the arrest of the remaining suspect and the determination of the circumstances that led to the victim’s death.
The incident has once again raised concerns about mob attacks and the resort to instant justice, with authorities maintaining that allegations of theft or other offences must be reported to the police rather than dealt with through violence.
