The Ghana Police Service has arrested Sibamay Zakaria, who was captured in a viral video allegedly assaulting a suspect.
The arrest came about two hours after the police service announced a manhunt for the individual captured in the video, following widespread circulation of the footage on social media.
The police said Zakaria is currently in custody and assisting with investigations and will be put before the court as investigations continue.
In its earlier statement, the Ghana Police Service condemned the incident and announced intensified efforts to identify and apprehend the suspect.
“The Service strongly condemns the incident and has intensified efforts to arrest the suspect and put him before the court.”
The Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) is also investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Police Service said the investigation would establish the full facts and circumstances of the case, adding that all persons found culpable would be taken through the appropriate disciplinary and legal processes.
The arrest underscores the Police Service’s stated commitment to addressing allegations of misconduct and ensuring that persons involved in criminal or disciplinary violations are dealt with in accordance with the law.
