Police said the operation followed intelligence received at about 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026, indicating that a robbery gang was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank, all located at Labone.
A police response team was immediately deployed to the area, where officers spotted members of the suspected gang in vehicles parked close to the banks.
According to the police, one of the vehicles sped away after the occupants noticed the officers.
The team pursued the vehicle and arrested Augustine Okechuku Maazi, while another occupant managed to escape.
Occupants of a second vehicle also attempted to flee while allegedly firing at the pursuing officers, but officers returned fire, resulting in the deaths of two (2) suspects.
