The Health Promotion Officer at Abrafi Women and Children Hospital in Techiman, Ms. Gladys Murphy, has urged members of the public to undergo regular testing for Hepatitis B, warning that the disease can cause serious health complications and may be fatal if left untreated.
She explained that hepatitis B is a viral infection that affects the liver and can progressively damage the organ when not detected and properly managed.
Speaking on the importance of screening, Ms. Murphy said early detection gives health professionals the opportunity to monitor the condition and provide appropriate care before it develops into more serious complications, including liver damage, liver failure and liver cancer.
She advised people who test negative for hepatitis B to take advantage of vaccination services to protect themselves against future infection.
For those who test positive, Ms. Murphy urged them not to panic but to seek medical attention and follow the advice of qualified health professionals.
She noted that regular medical monitoring and appropriate treatment can help control the condition and reduce the risk of complications.
She also encouraged the public to adopt healthy practices to reduce the risk of infection.
These, she said, include avoiding the sharing of sharp objects such as razors, needles and other items that may come into contact with blood.
Ms. Murphy further urged residents to make regular medical check-ups part of their health routine, stressing that people may live with Hepatitis B without knowing they are infected.
She called on the public to prioritise testing, vaccination and early medical care, describing prevention and early detection as important measures in reducing the impact of hepatitis B on individuals and families.
