The Bono East Regional Planning Manager of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Mr. Bismark Adusei, has urged drivers and vehicle owners to make regular vehicle maintenance a priority to reduce road crashes linked to mechanical failures.
He said proper maintenance of vehicles was essential to road safety and could help prevent avoidable breakdowns and accidents on Ghana’s roads.
Mr. Adusei advised motorists to conduct basic checks on their vehicles before embarking on journeys.
He particularly urged drivers to pay close attention to critical components, including the braking system, tyres, steering mechanism, engine, lights and other essential vehicle parts.
According to him, motorists should not wait until a vehicle develops a serious fault before taking it to a mechanic, stressing that preventive maintenance could help identify potential problems before they become a threat to road users.
Mr. Adusei noted that some crashes attributed to mechanical defects could be prevented if drivers and vehicle owners developed the habit of servicing their vehicles regularly.
He added that routine maintenance also offers financial benefits to vehicle owners by reducing the likelihood of expensive repairs, extending the operational life of vehicles and minimising unexpected breakdowns on the road.
The NRSA official therefore appealed to commercial and private vehicle owners to treat vehicle maintenance as an essential part of responsible driving.
He urged motorists to ensure that their vehicles are mechanically sound before every journey, saying the safety of passengers, pedestrians and other road users depends partly on the condition of vehicles on the road.
Mr. Adusei called for a collective commitment from drivers, vehicle owners and other stakeholders to improve road safety and reduce preventable crashes across the country.
