Police Arrest 80 Suspects in Major Anti-Crime Operation Across Upper East Region

A joint security operation involving the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team and the Upper East Regional Police Command has resulted in the arrest of 80 suspects during a large-scale intelligence-led crackdown across several communities in the Upper East Region.

The operation, conducted between May 25 and June 3, 2026, targeted criminal activities in Zuarungu, Bolgatanga, Tongo, Bongo, and the Nabdam District as part of intensified efforts to combat narcotics-related offences and other criminal activities in the region.

According to preliminary police investigations, many of the suspects are believed to have been involved in the sale and consumption of narcotic substances, as well as other criminal activities.

Arrests Across Multiple Communities

Police reported that 12 suspects, comprising eight men and four women, were arrested in Zuarungu. Among the female suspects were three Nigerian nationals and one Ghanaian.

In Bongo, officers arrested 34 suspects, including 32 men and two women, while operations in Perlungu, Kongo, and Nangodi within the Nabdam District led to the arrest of 14 suspects, made up of 12 men and two women.

An additional 20 suspects were apprehended in Bolgatanga during the operation.

Suspected Narcotics and Other Exhibits Retrieved

The operation also led to the recovery of a range of items believed to be connected to criminal activities.

In Tongo, police retrieved a motorcycle, assorted foreign-manufactured cigarettes, male condoms, and quantities of dried plant material suspected to be cannabis, commonly known as Indian hemp.

Officers operating in Bongo recovered three rounds of 5.56×45mm NATO ammunition and two motorbikes.

In the Nabdam District, police seized parcels and sacks containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotic substances, assorted beverages believed to contain narcotic content, an unregistered motorbike, foreign cigarettes, and components of a casino jackpot machine.

Meanwhile, suspects arrested in Bolgatanga were found in possession of dried plant materials suspected to be cannabis, assorted cigarettes, three motorbikes—including a Yamaha Sirius and a Luojia motorcycle—as well as an unregistered Haojue motorbike and a casino jackpot machine.

Suspects to Face Prosecution

The Upper East Regional Police Command said all 80 suspects remain in custody and are assisting with investigations.

Authorities indicated that the suspects will be processed and arraigned before the courts to face charges in accordance with the law.

The operation forms part of ongoing police efforts to dismantle criminal networks, curb the circulation of illegal drugs, and improve public safety across communities in the Upper East Region.
